5 Mile Creek.....

Five Mile Creek!!!
File Mile Creek is our integrated subject for term 3.We have been looking at houses, what makes a home and also learning about sub-division. We had to sub-divide five mile creek! To do this, we had to have at least 100 squares of shops and plaza’s, at least have 20 houses and to fill up the whole area of five mile creek. For some it took 3 days and for others it took a week. But the teachers had a surprise for us…..we also had to give our land value! That definitely took a week! After we had done the land valuation we had to pick a job out of the hat and we would be stuck with that job and profile. Our profiles gradually became bigger and we did an activity to see what our superannuation and stuff like that are. Then we worked our regular income. Nowadays we are developing our floor plan for one of the houses in our five mile creek plan

Term 2 Canberra Camp & 5/6 Election!

Last term the 5/6’s learnt about the Australian government and how it works. So we did so much work that the teachers were so tired and after camp to, can you imagine!!!! We went to Canberra for our camp. For a whole week it was a lot of fun. On the first day everyone was so excited but it was so boring. We stopped at the edemougha pub for lunch, and then we visited different stops on the why like the dog on the tucker box and so on. On to the mint that was cool!!!. On the second day we went to the high court of Australia. Court 2 was sitting (court of appeal) and seen all the other courts, then lunch we had pizza, then electoral education centre, then the national film and sound archives and then a drive past some embassies and at night we swam in the A.I.S swimming pool.

On the third day national museum, then Australian institute of sport, then Questacon that was fun!!! I went on the free fall 7.2m tall on a bar an then let go.

On Thursday we went to Parliament House and we did a role play and I was p.m., then off to the war memorial that was so interesting.

Then our trip back home that was so boring. That was our trip to Canberra
When we got back we had an election I was the leader for the Blue Monkey Lakers we won that was so fun!!!!

RESPECT

Respect is to treat someone or anyone the way you want to be treated. It also means not to tease people that look different, wear different clothes and do different things. These are ways of showing respect:

* Giving your seat up for an elderly person or a pregnant woman on public transport

* Attending someone's funeral

* Accepting other cultures and customs

* Always use your manners

* Don't wreck other people's things

* Respect peoples feelings and opinions

* Respect our laws

That is what respect means to me and it should mean to you.

Last week The Lakes played Plenty Parklands in volleyball. Plenty park girls won the first game but the second game The Lakes won. Because it was a tie The Lakes and Plenty Parklands we had to play another game. Keir said there is only 8 minutes so who ever had the highest score they would wIn and The Lakes won! The lakes boys lost by 2 games.

Kyra G

Cricket: last week we played against Plenty Parklands. It was a close game. But they just beat us in the end; it was only by 6 runs. Kyle took the only wicket he balled it and caught it. Shaun was the best batsmen of the day. He hit a whopping 40 runs. Our only girl Keely almost got a wicket how good is that! Our team was pretty sad because we lost but we still had fun. I think we will win this week against Whittlesea well I hope our team wins. Oh yeah one more thing it was raining so that made it even harder.

What a week

It certainly has been an extremely busy week and a bit at The Lakes in 5/6. It is fair to say that all students have settled and are getting used to a Middle Years timetable and taking part in some amazing subjects.

This week we had a visit from the Snakebuster who taught us about snake safety and equipped us with skills when we come across a snake, and more importantly so we dont panic in the event of seeing one! He brought with him a range of animals from frogs, blue tongued lizards to 5 of the worlds most deadliest snakes.....(all with their fangs removed) such as a Red Belly Blacksnake, Taipan and a Brownsnake.

Some other exciting things that have been happening in 5/6 have been getting our teeth stuck into weekly Science rotations exploring Chemical Science. We are at the half way point of these activities with our CSIRO incursion rapidly approaching. We have been exposed to popping popcorn, bouncing eggs, growing rust, exploring sugar and much much more.

Groups is yet to begin so this week our Assistant Principal did an amazing session with us on Bullying and now we are able to target certain behaviours and be on the look out for the Queen Bee & Tough Guy!! Remember Who wants to be THE COMPASSIONATE SUPPORTER?

Great news that interschool sport is back this year, the bad news is we had a bye this week. So some more practice was had by our Lakes teams. Good luck to those competing this week.

From next week students will take full ownership of this blog and you as parents will be able to be updated by your children about the weekly happenings of 5/6.

See you next week.

2008 All Systems Go

Wow! Welcome Back and what a first week at the Lakes. We were extremely excited this week as we welcomed 90 students into 5/6 this year. There were some familiar faces and there were a number of nervous faces amongst the high number of new students that joined our growing school. The anxious faces soon turned to smiling faces as students settled very quickly and meet their 5/6 teachers who are Renee Short, Cameron Black, Fiona Tarry, Michelle Smith and Robyn Packett.

The focus of week 1 was to get settled and make new friends. This was very successful. We also had lots of sports practice but lost some time due to the very welcome rain! Our first task was to get to know our home group and we made All About Me posters. The 5/6 team also look extensively at the schools values which are Honesty, Belonging, Personal Best and Respect. From the schools values students were asked to bring in personal items that represent these items. We then made four values museums of these values and they look fantastic!

Here's looking to week 2 where we get stuck into our program and we will be exposed to subjects like Home Economics, Technology, Performing Arts Dance, Drama and Instrumental Music.
